Abstract: The article deals with the history of development of the higher history education and historical science in Stavropol Krai in the second half of XX c. The research tradition and formation of the intellectual space in the region are considered through the fates of the historians, and history of several institutions responsible for history education and training. Stavropol Pedagogical Institute’s (since 1996 – University’s) Faculty of History is used as an example of how the higher education system in the region established and developed over the years as a part of the soviet society’s intellectual space.
