| Abstract: | This study examines missionary practices im-plemented within the boundaries of the Stav-ropol diocese in the early twentieth century, situated within the context of sectarianism and schism (raskol) and their containment. It analyzes the historical experience of or-ganizing the missionary activity of the Russian Orthodox Church in the North Caucasus amidst the systemic crisis of the period under review. The source base comprises legislative acts of the Russian Empire, materials from church periodicals, and documents from the State Archive of Stavropol Krai contain-ing correspondence, reports, resolutions, and directives pertaining to mission work. The analysis demonstrates that by the turn of the century, the mission had acquired a more institutionally articulated character through the development of Orthodox fra-ternities, parish schools, lending libraries, specialized itinerant missions, field preach-ing, and theological-missionary training courses. The findings indicate that regional ethno-confessional and linguistic heteroge-neity constrained the application of the Ilm-insky system in its established form. Archival evidence reveals that mission outcomes were contingent upon clerical preparedness and personal agency, as well as persistent tensions between pastoral methods of influence and administrative regulation. Through the case study of Simeon Nikolsky's activities, this article argues that institutional maturation did not resolve internal problems within the ec-clesiastical structure nor ensure an uncondi-tional consolidation of Orthodoxy's authority in the region. |
