Abstract: | The aim of the research is to present the concept of “lord” in Russian and English. The achievement of this goal entails the following tasks: to establish a list of the nuclear lexemes of the concept “gentleman” in the Russian language; to determine and to compare the semantics of the nuclear lexemes representing the concept “гocпoдин” (“master”) in Russian and English, and explore the concept in the original Russian and the English texts; to consider the possibility of the representation of the conceptual part of the concept under study in translation. Design/Methodology/Approach: The concept research is based on the observation using a variety of cultural and linguistic material and description of the concept core and its periphery in synonymic rows. Findings: The core of the concept “гocпoдин” (“master”) in the Russian language was determined using the meanings of lexemes recorded in explanatory and synonymous dictionaries, and an etymological analysis of the concept “гocпoдин” (“master”) was performed. The authors analyze bilingual dictionaries and examples of translations of literary texts and examine the specifics of the functioning of the concept “гocпoдин” (“master”) and its synonymic rows in Russian and English. Originality/Value: The thematic groups of the concept “гocпoдин” (“master”) identified in Russian are compared with their equivalents in English. The theoretical significance is seen in the fact that the analyzed language material and the results obtained allow us to supplement and expand the idea of the linguistic and cultural concept “гocпoдин” (“master”) in such branches of linguistic knowledge as conceptology, theory of intercultural communication, linguoculturology, lexicology |
