Abkhazian Scientific Society in the 1920-S: the History of Formation and Activities

Abstract

The paper examines the history of formation of Abkhaz Scientific Society (AbSS), which has become an academic center organizing comprehensive research into Abkhazia. The authors analyze the activities of the Society including the development of theoretical approaches to archaeology, history and linguistics as well as proliferation of scientific knowledge among population. The conclusion is made that Abkhaz Scientific Society lay down the foundations of Abkhazian studies and promoted the formation of the first scientific institutions in Abkhazia.
