Abstract: The article considers the current approaches to the design of public spaces to ensure effective communication, cultural and leisure activities of the inhabitants of settlements. It presents the results of the literature analysis and empirical data of the population surveys in the South of Russia, which characterise the demand for the attributes of public space and its modern vision. The study finds that, especially in the pandemic period, the relevance of the organisation of public leisure spaces that meet modern requirements and demands of the population for communication and recreational activities has increased. The need for public cultural and leisure spaces for free self-expression and self-presentation of national cultures is identified. An essential attribute of public space should be the landscaping of such a space and an attractive landscape design, which allows realising the cultural and leisure needs of the population. Designing public space, taking into account, the integration of the needs of different categories of the population develops the prospect of positive cultural, leisure and health-saving practices.
