Abstract: Spectral dependences of the complex refractive index of kerosene-based magnetic fluids are measured by an ellipsometric method. The concentration dependence of the real part of the refractive index is characterized by an effective medium approximation. The influence of light absorption and scattering on the extinction spectra of magnetic fluids is discussed
