In the early 20th century, Russia developed a significant interest to Austria-Hungary and, first, to the situation of Slavic nations in it. At the same time, negative attitude towards the domestic and foreign policy of Austria-Hungary dominated in Russia, and this interfered with its comprehensive study; Russians did not have a good grasp of affairs in the Hungarian half of the Habsburg Empire. The Russian Consulate General Secretary in Budapest G.D. Mavrocordato attempted to fill this vacuum and to present a multi-facet image of Hungary in reports to the Russian Embassy in Vienna and later in his bookru
