Abstract: The current development stage of the world economy is characterized by the creation of regional trade associations which are formed based on the interstate trade agreements. Regional initiatives are often more visible than those that fall within the scope of regulation of international organizations, including World Trade Organization (WTO). The article describes the regionalization of the world economy and presents comparative analysis of the investment activities of regional associations. Besides, the study analyzes the role of foreign direct investment and investment attractiveness of ASEAN countries, and shows that investment liberalization is an important condition for the creation of a single market and production base in the integrated ASEAN economic community
