| Abstract: | The article analyzes the ethnodemographic situation in the city of Baku in the second half of the 19th — first half of the 20th centuries, taking into account changes in the historical context and socio-political situation. A significant part of the source base is represented by statistical data reflecting the dynamics of population size and ethnic composition during the period under study. It is noted that the uniqueness of Baku in the imperial and Soviet periods consisted in its ethnic diversity, which was conditioned by historical prerequisites, state policy, and the active industrial development of the city. Based on various sources, the authors systematize and present data on the national composition of the city's residents and population dynamics, which made it possible to identify separate periods of growth and decline of various ethnic groups and changes in their proportions within the total population of the city, as well as to correlate these processes with major historical transformations through which Russia and the Transcaucasia region were passing, which determines the novelty of the work. It has been revealed that the highest population growth was recorded in 1873–1886 and in the first two decades of Soviet power. |
