The Caucasus and Adjacent Territories in Publications of the Headquarters of the Caucasian Military District of the Late 19th — Early 20th Centuries

Abstract

The paper focuses on the issues of the Headquarters of the Caucasian Military District publication activities related to the study of the Caucasus and adjacent lands at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Based on published works, archival sources and publications in the local periodical press, the work of officers of the military-historical and intelligence department of the headquarters is analyzed through their participation in the preparation of periodicals and the publication of individual analytical works on the Caucasus and the East. It was concluded that, in terms of the volume of printed materials, the district headquarters was a worthy competitor to civilian scientific centers — the Caucasian Archaeographic Commission and the Caucasian Department of the Russian Geographical Society. Its publishing activities contributed to the development of the concept of the history of the “establishment of Russian rule in the Caucasus”, as well as to the expansion of the empirical base on which the further development of Russian oriental studies took place.
